What you need to know about the capsule wardrobe

Victoria Beckham is one of the most minimal designers we’ve seen, especially for the modern generation of minimalism. The showing of her SS20 dresses for women at @londonfashionweek shows subtle pieces meant to be layered and mixed and matched - totally Beckham. Not only does a capsule wardrobe eliminate fast fashion, but they’re better on your wallet in the long run.

The problem with fast fashion is that they’re displayed in stores to attract customers who are loyal to the brand. So they’ll put out “hyper” pieces that can only be worn once, like a feathered sequin dress. It’s stunning visually, but realistically, can you wear it all the time? These statement “hyper” pieces are meant to be worn once, an item you buy for that exciting moment. The problem with new fashion trends is their seasonal expiry date. The latest fashion for women is mostly hyper pieces that go out of style the next season. Latest western dresses in fashion can be “capsulated” if they aren’t statemented dresses.

What is a capsule wardrobe? It’s a mini collection of neutral-coloured classic wardrobe pieces used to mix-and-match. All the items are versatile for every occasion, any season- made to fit you just right. A capsule wardrobe consists of pieces that you already own and love to wear, something that never goes out of style. How you can start your personal capsule wardrobe:

  • Reduce your closet to 35-40 pieces
  • Don’t shop until the next season and make the most of these 35-40 pieces by layering and pairing in any way you choose. Get creative!
  • Before the next season starts, shop for pieces you want to wear for the new season. Try and stay away from “hyper’ pieces, but you can choose the ones you want as statement pieces to add to your capsule wardrobe. Only 25% of your entire wardrobe should consist of “hyper” pieces. The remaining are wardrobe essentials that add value - the ability for an item of clothing to be paired with everything in your closet.

A capsule wardrobe allows you to rediscover your personal sense of style, saving you time in the morning to get ready. And for a mom of four, @VictoriaBeckham does just that. We’ll show you how she does fashion right.
