Going on a detox has become a popular trend now with all top celebrities joining the bandwagon. But the real question is, “how helpful is it?” or wait, “is it even helpful?” Does a detox really help cleanse our body to such an extent that water and healthy eating can’t do?
Going on a juice detox affects us both physically and mentally. According to Kimberly Sasso, R.D, a three-day juice cleansing is not real, but fiction. She told Shape Magazine, “Before you embark on a 72-hour, cold-pressed sipping spree, know this about the three-day juice cleanse - Juice cleanses are a fad. There is no current, clear evidence that shows any health benefits to juice cleanses."
While detoxes are a promise to clear out unwanted toxins from your body and help you lose weight faster, going on an only-detox spree and skipping meals has some side effects as well. If you have read our previous article, ‘Why healthy eating is better than dieting’, you’ll see why obsessively monitoring your food take will make you all the more stressed out and anxious. You will lose weight, not because of detox, but because of not eating properly, which again, is not good for your body.
When you eat a low-calorie diet or are just on a detox spree, you use up the glycogen stored in your body and makes your body lose water weight, thus making you lose overall weight. After you’re done with the detox diet and start eating regularly, you will instantly gain back weight because the water and glycogen will be restored in your body. While on a detox diet, you will also miss out on all the vital nutrients like fat, fiber and proteins.
Andy Bellatti, MS, RD, a Las Vegas-based dietitian told lifehacker.com, “Will drinking nothing but juice for three or five days land you in the hospital or result in irreversible nutrient deficiencies? No, but it is also unnecessary. Our bodies remove toxins on a daily basis thanks to the kidneys, lungs and liver. The whole point of going to the bathroom is to flush out toxins!” According to her, our bodies are already pretty good at removing toxins and it doesn’t need any additional ways to do that.
